Supported Housing Review 2023

A recent report Supported Housing Review 2023, published by the Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research, Sheffield Hallam University, the complexity of needs among people with learning disabilities and autistic people has increased significantly. Intersectionality of needs is a key consideration for people with learning disabilities including past trauma, sensory needs, mental health, and drug and alcohol misuse.

A significant gap is identified in the provision for adults with autism without a learning disability and adults with sensory needs. The lack of units for people with complex needs, autism and learning disabilities meant that authorities were frequently having to spot purchase accommodation.

58% of Commissioners reported an increase in commissioned services for people with learning disabilities and/or autistic people.

86% of Local Authorities reported that the demand for supported housing units in their area will increase over the next five years and 75% of Commissioners said the demand for supported housing units for people with learning disabilities and autism will increase over the next 5 years.

There are 634,000 units of supported housing in Britain available at social rents or affordable rents in 2023 out of which, long-term supported housing for working-age disabled people with a learning disability and autism is around 59,900 units.
