This accreditation will benefit all stakeholders and partners in our supply chain by enhancing their credibility and opening opportunities for collaboration on Sustainable initiatives. It will help all of us differentiate ourselves in the market, reduce risk and attract conscious clients while strengthening long-term relationships and preparing for the future.

It enhances our vision of an equitable society by infusing social and environmental responsibilities into our operations, driving us to deliver our Mission of ‘Raising the quality bar of Specialised Supported Housing’ for vulnerable individuals. It ensures continuous improvement in our standards, helping us exceed industry norms and promoting fairness in our Specialised Supported Social Housing sub-sector.

Many people with a learning disability and/or autism end up in mental health units not because they need inpatient treatment, but because of a failure to invest in the right community support with a focus on early intervention and preventing crisis. According to an NHS report published last year (2023), 41% of people with learning disability and/or autistic people should not even be in hospital as their needs could be met in the community. Using the figure from the FOI that would mean £18m a month is being spent on locking people up in units where they don’t need to be. Over half a billion pounds a year is spent locking up people with a learning disability and/or autistic people in mental health hospitals in England. Figures released after a freedom of information request to NHS England and Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) show that, over a year, around £534 million is being spent on inpatient beds for just over 2000 people with a learning disability and/or autistic people in England.

The new analysis estimates the average cost of detaining someone with a learning disability and/or autistic people in a mental health unit is £237,000 per year. With the average length of stay for current inpatients amounting to nearly 5 years, this cost rises to £1.2M per person.
