Resident's story
MM’s Life at Hospital
MM was an inpatient for over the years and was detained in hospital under the Mental Health Act. She was held in long-term seclusion and nursed/supported on a 4:1 ratio, 24 hours per day. She was facing the constraints of illness and autism, marked by challenging and abusive behaviours, self-harm tendencies, and environmental difficulties. MM regularly stated that she didn’t wish to be detained in the hospital. MM’s level of distress and thereby incidents of behaviour that challenged herself and others had increased exponentially since her hospital admission.
What was needed
Due to the complexity of her needs, no one could help; MM required specialised support within a suitable and compassionate environment. Her challenges were closely linked to autism and a learning disability, conditions that were exacerbated in an institutionalised setting, an environment that was not ideal for her. Upon careful examination of her case, it became evident that she possessed considerable capabilities and could lead an independent life, engaging in activities she desired. What she truly needed was belief in her potential. A tailored environment that was designed to meet her unique requirements was essential – a place that felt like her own home, fostering a sense of independence within the community.
Time for MM to move out from Hospital
MM came out of the hospital after spending over 4 years there and moved to her new home. Her life has been transformed and improved significantly. She has achieved stability in her new residence and is genuinely content. Her passion for music has led her to attend concerts and clubs, and she now enjoys visits from her family, and reconnecting with her nephew. This newfound independence has sparked her interest in educational courses and the prospect of forming meaningful relationships.
